Why do they make ugly cars?

Have you ever wondered why some car manufacturers produce ugly cars? You know, the ones that look like boxes on wheels, or have weird shapes and colors. You would think that with the same budget and technology, they could design something more appealing and attractive. Well, in this blog post, I will try to explain some of the possible reasons behind this phenomenon.

First of all, beauty is subjective. What you find ugly, someone else might find charming or unique. Car designers have to balance the preferences of different markets and cultures, as well as the expectations of their target customers. Sometimes, they deliberately create a controversial or unconventional design to stand out from the crowd and generate buzz. Think of the Tesla Cybertruck, for example. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it certainly got people talking.

Secondly, functionality is important. Car manufacturers have to consider many factors when designing a car, such as aerodynamics, fuel efficiency, safety, comfort, performance, etc. Sometimes, these factors may conflict with aesthetic considerations. For instance, a car that is too low or too sleek may not have enough space for passengers or luggage, or may not perform well on rough roads. A car that is too flashy or colorful may attract unwanted attention from thieves or police. A car that is too conventional or boring may not sell well in a competitive market.

Thirdly, innovation is risky. Car manufacturers have to constantly innovate and experiment with new technologies and materials to stay ahead of the game and meet the demands of the future. However, innovation comes with a cost and a risk. It may take years to develop and test a new concept or prototype, and it may not always work as expected or be well received by the public. Sometimes, car manufacturers have to compromise or sacrifice some aspects of their design to make it feasible or affordable. For example, a car that is fully electric or autonomous may have limitations in terms of range, speed, reliability, etc.

Anyway, this is a question that many car enthusiasts have asked themselves over the years. Why do some car manufacturers produce models that are widely considered to be ugly, when they could invest the same amount of money and resources into making decent, beautiful cars?

To answer this question, we need to consider several factors that influence the design of a car, such as market demand, engineering constraints, safety regulations, cost efficiency, and brand identity. Sometimes, these factors can result in compromises or trade-offs that affect the aesthetic appeal of a car.

Let's take a look at some examples of cars that are often criticized for their appearance, and try to understand the reasons behind their design choices.

1998 Fiat Multipla

The Fiat Multipla was a compact MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) that was launched in 1998. It had a distinctive design that featured two rows of three seats, a large windshield that extended over the driver's head, and a bulbous front end with two pairs of headlights.

The Multipla was designed to offer maximum interior space and versatility for a small family car. It had a flat floor, a high roofline, and a modular seating system that allowed different configurations. It also had a low center of gravity and a wide track, which improved its handling and stability.

However, the Multipla was widely panned for its unconventional and awkward appearance. It was voted the ugliest car in the world by readers of Top Gear magazine in 1999. It was also mocked by comedians and media outlets for its resemblance to a frog, a whale, or an alien spaceship.

The Multipla was redesigned in 2004 to give it a more conventional and streamlined look. The new model had a single pair of headlights, a smaller windshield, and a lower roofline. It also had improved engines and equipment. However, the sales of the Multipla declined significantly after the facelift, and it was discontinued in 2010.

2014 Jeep Cherokee

The Jeep Cherokee is a mid-size SUV (sport utility vehicle) that was introduced in 2014 as the successor of the Jeep Liberty. It had a radical design that departed from the traditional boxy and rugged style of previous Jeep models. It had a sleek and aerodynamic body, a curved grille, and a split headlight arrangement that placed the daytime running lights above the main headlights.

The Cherokee was designed to appeal to a wider and younger audience that valued fuel efficiency, comfort, and technology over off-road capability and durability. It had a lightweight and rigid platform, an advanced four-wheel drive system, and a nine-speed automatic transmission. It also had various features such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and park assist.

However, the Cherokee was met with mixed reactions from Jeep fans and critics for its controversial and polarizing appearance. Some praised it for its modern and innovative design, while others criticized it for its lack of identity and character. Some even compared it to a rodent, an insect, or an angry bird.

The Cherokee received a minor update in 2019 to address some of the complaints about its design. The new model had a more conventional and unified headlight layout, a larger grille, and a revised rear end. It also had improved performance and safety systems. The sales of the Cherokee increased slightly after the refresh, but it still lagged behind its competitors in the segment.

2012 Mini Cooper Coupe

The Mini Cooper Coupe was a two-seater sports car that was launched in 2012 as part of the Mini family of vehicles. It had a unique design that featured a sloping roofline, a rear spoiler that popped up at high speeds, and a reverse baseball cap-like shape.

The Coupe was designed to offer maximum driving fun and agility for Mini enthusiasts. It had a stiff suspension, a low center of gravity, and a powerful engine. It also had various customization options such as colors, stripes, wheels, and decals.

However, the Coupe was widely criticized for its impractical and unattractive appearance. It was considered to be too small, too cramped, too noisy, and too expensive for what it offered. It was also ridiculed by reviewers and consumers for its odd proportions and silly looks.

The Coupe was discontinued in 2015 due to poor sales and demand. It was replaced by the Mini Cooper Roadster, which had a similar design but with a retractable soft top.

Unfortunately, this is just the tip of the iceberg, the list is very long…

But!

Of course, this does not mean that we have to settle for ugly cars. We can always voice our opinions and preferences, and hope that car manufacturers will listen and improve their designs. After all, we are the ones who drive them.
